5 Quick 5-Minute Tasks for Before May Madness

or how to maximize the calm before the storm

A few years ago I polled my newsletter subscribers on what months they felt were the busiest and most overwhelming of the year. Not super surprising was November-December with all the holidays but a very close second was May.  This season is now called the “Mayhem of Maycember" —Mother’s Day, school events, graduations, sports playoffs, Memorial Day, and the rush to lock in summer camps and travel wrapped up in 31 days. 

Before your calendar explodes, use April as your secret weapon: a low-key month to reset and declutter so you don't add more chaos when life accelerates.

As a professional organizer, the secret strategy to beat the overwhelm of this season is to take consistent action in short, manageable time increments.  I've seen how tiny, bite-sized actions in at anytime create huge breathing room for the coming months. 

You don't need a full weekend purge—just five simple 5-minute tasks that fit into your already packed days. These quick decluttering habits prevent buildup while life is busy, keeping your home (and your personal space) calm without major extra effort.

  1. One-Minute Rule Scan.   Spend 5 minutes applying the "One-Minute Rule": Scan your kitchen counter, mud room, or entryway and handle anything that takes under a minute—hang a coat, break down & recycle a box, tidy part of a drawer, toss junk mail, or file a school note. In busy homes with active family members, this quick pass stops small messes from growing. Do it during coffee brewing or a quick break instead of popping on social media.

  2. Decide Later Sweep.   Grab a decorative basket (your "Decode Later" bin) and spend 5 minutes dropping in items you're undecided on—like that extra vase, kids' artwork, or unworn accessory. No decisions now—just relocate them. This clears surfaces fast and reduces decision fatigue in the short time frame between meetings and playdates. You must revisit the bin weekly for decision time but it’s usually easier when it’s not in the spot you’re accustomed to seeing it. You see it with fresh eyes and can decide more easily whether to keep or toss.

  3. Pantry or Fridge Spot Check.    Open your pantry or fridge and spend 5 minutes tossing expired items (condiments, produce, sauces, snacks, or leftovers). This prevents overflow and gives you a quick dopamine hit of clutter conquering success. Plus it’s a visual treat to free up some space It's a fast win that keeps things fresh before May's meal prep ramps up.

  4. One In, One Out Entryway Edit.  Focus on your mudroom or foyer: For any new item that's arrived, spend 5 minutes finding one similar thing to donate, toss, or recycle. If you’ve ordered new swimsuits for the kids, pull out the ones that are being replaced;  If new makeup arrives, toss out the old version. If you have a new magazine issue, toss the old one. This habit curbs accumulation of excess items, ensuring space stays functional without a full declutter.

  5. Quick Purse Clean-Out.   Dump the contents of your everyday purse onto a tray or countertop and spend 5 minutes sorting: Toss expired receipts, old lip balms, crumpled tissues, or random wrappers. Wipe crumbs, return stray items to their homes (keys to hook, cards to wallet), and restock essentials (hand sanitizer, mints, a pen). A clean purse means less stress when you're dashing out for carpool or a quick errand—plus, it feels like a mini luxury reset every time you reach in.

April is your buffer month—use these 5-minute tasks to build habits so May feels manageable, not manic. Small actions compound: less visual noise means less stress, more presence for your family, and energy for the celebrations and vacations you’re in the middle of planning!
