Organizing Any Holiday Decor

Decorating our homes for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween are all fun ways to observe and celebrate holidays throughout the year. Keeping track of all of the different decorative items is a bit more challenging.

  • Do I organize by color so that everything green goes together?

  • If so, does kelly green for St Patrick’s Day get mixed in with light green for Easter and forest green for Christmas?

  • Do holiday themed napkins and towels get stored with other kitchen towels or with the other decorations?

  • What about Christmas china and mugs?

Let’s solve this problem of how and where to store all of your holiday decor once and for all.

All holiday decor is stored together by holiday.

  1. Designate a specific location for holiday decor. Basement with shelves, attic with shelves, closet….it doesn’t matter where except that it’s stored in ONE place.

  2. Use individual clear bins with lids for storing each holiday’s decorations. DO NOT MIX holidays!

  3. Label the bins with at least which holiday it is for. If you have multiple bins per holiday, you may want to group similar items together in the bin and label appropriately such as “Christmas tree decorations” and “Christmas table linens.” If you have space, you may even want to store decorations by location if you’ll set it up the same way again such as “Halloween dining table” or “Easter mantle.”

  4. Include all items for that holiday, even kitchen towels and napkins with the decor. This puts everything in one place thus fewer locations you have to remember to search. Since you only use your Christmas mugs and kitchen towels at that time of year, you don’t have to look far to find it all once December rolls around.

  5. If you find decor that you’re not happy with anymore and don’t want to use again, donate or give it away. Lots of charities are happy to have holiday decor available to their clientele and you don’t need to store and organize what no longer serves you.

  6. The ONLY holiday decor I might suggest storing separately is outdoor decor. It tends to be larger and heavier than inside decorations. Usually that is best stored in a garage or closer to where it will be displayed. Make sure it is clean and dry before putting it away at the end of the season.

  7. My favorite tip is all about remembering how everything was decorated. When you take a picture, save it to your Notes with a description of where it was and for what holiday. That way you can search your notes by “Christmas front door” instead of scrolling through your thousands of photos.

Everyone’s home is different and how they celebrate holidays, let alone decorate for them. You have to take your space into account when figuring out the best place to store it all.

Remember to measure your space before you buy and bins or shelves to assure you have the right sizes and quantities. Or you can call a professional to help you. 😉

These are the bins and shelves I recommend and use ALL the time. For Christmas-specific recommendations, see my Amazon shop.

Clear bins with lids. These come in a variety of sizes for all kinds of holiday item storage.

Weathertite bins. These are so sturdy . The 41 qt and 62 qt stack very well together

48” x 18” shelves with wheels. If you want it today, check your local Home Depot and Costco stores.

3 shelf option. I’d still add the wheels.

You must label the contents of your bins even if they are clear! Use a label maker or Sharpie & white duct tape.
